Taipei:
Chipmaker Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Ring Company (TSMC) and Sony Group are reportedly considering joint construction of a semiconductor factory in western Japan amid global chip shortages.

According to Nikkei Asia, the total investment in the project is estimated to be 800 billion yen ($7 billion).

Japan’s top auto parts maker Denso also wants to participate through steps such as installing equipment on site. The report said members of the Toyota Motor Group want a steady supply of the chips used in their auto parts.

Sony may also take a minority stake in a new company that will manage the factory, which will be located in Kumamoto Prefecture.

The factory will make semiconductors that use in-camera image sensors, as well as chips for automobiles and other products.
