Digital Desk, Kolkata. The state government has issued a terror alert in the state during the worship, which indicates that West Bengal may now be a new terrorist target. While senior police officials are yet to come to a conclusion, the arrests made by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and the Kolkata Special Task Force (STF) in the past few months reflect the activities of the terror module in the state. According to the NIA, these terrorist henchmen use the porous border of Bangladesh to enter the country. In an alert issued by the state home department, Durga Puja organizers have been asked to set up a system to monitor the movement of the crowd. They have been asked to install CCTV cameras and watch towers around the puja pandals and work closely with the local police station.
The notice also mentioned that the immersion of all the idols is to be completed between October 15 (Dashmi) and October 18 in consultation with the local police stations. In view of the prevailing threats from divisive and terrorist groups to destabilize the country and create law and order problem, you are advised to exercise utmost caution during the celebration of festivals, the statement said.
The notice further suggested, community puja organizers should be asked to keep sufficient number of volunteers in puja pandals to monitor the movement of suspicious persons and all volunteers should be directed to be in constant touch with the local police. A senior official of the state home department said, the effort of the state government to include puja committees in the security system is significant. This shows that the state home department is planning a comprehensive security and security series, which in itself is conclusive enough to understand the importance and potential.
The NIA arrested one of the most dreaded IS handlers of the subcontinent, Al Haleef alias Abu Ibrahim, from Bengaluru in 2020. This IS handler was a brilliant student of economics before entering the terror world. Haliph, disguised as Sujit Chandra Debnath, was working as a mason’s assistant in Bangalore. Similarly, Kolkata STF, the elite Kolkata Police force arrested three JMB operatives Naziur Rehman Powell, Mikail Khan and Rabiul Islam, who had entered India and were living in the posh residential area of the city.
To hide his identity, Powell used the Hindu name Jairam Bepari. She and Mikail Khan alias Sheikh Sabbir befriended two Hindu women in Haridevpur area and had planned to get married. This would have helped them to recruit more people without creating doubts. Sometimes through direct conversation and sometimes through online they are targeting unemployed youths in the state. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) and the Kolkata Police’s Special Task Force (STF) have obtained this information from three JMB terrorists who were recently arrested by the STF from a colony on the southern outskirts of Kolkata. Investigating officers are concerned that systematic brainwashing by these terrorist groups has left many bright but unemployed youth isolated from mainstream society.
