Digital Desk, Chennai. A fisherman from Pudukottai district went missing after falling into the sea, while two others were arrested. The accident happened when his boat was stopped in the middle of the sea by a Sri Lankan naval vessel.

The incident took place on Monday, when three fishermen Rajkiran (30), Suganthan (23), Arokia Xavier (32) went to sea near the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) at Katchatheevu, officials said. Seeing the Sri Lankan naval ship, the fishermen tried to escape. However, the Sri Lankan Navy took two fishermen into custody while Rajkiran fell into the sea.

A Sri Lankan Navy statement said they rescued two Indian fishermen from a sinking ship while they were poaching in Sri Lankan seas, but a third fisherman went missing after the incident and the Navy is searching for him. Is. The Navy was engaged in pursuing Indian trawlers, which resulted in a collision with the naval vessel, the statement said. The two rescued fishermen were detained at Kankesanthurai in Jaffna.

Tensions between Indian and Sri Lankan fishermen and Indian fishermen and the Sri Lankan Navy have been rising in the Palk Straits for the past one year. The fishermen from northern Sri Lanka had complained against poaching of Indian fishermen in Sri Lankan waters and wrote a letter to the Government of India to take immediate action against those entering Sri Lankan seas by crossing IMBL.

Senthilkumar (32), who had sailed from Pudukottai on January 18, 2021, reportedly died after his boat sank when the Sri Lankan Navy tried to arrest him. The fishermen of the village alleged that they were thrashed to death by the Sri Lankan Navy when they crossed the IMBL. The then AIADMK government announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the families of each fisherman who died.
