Ricky Ponting Was interested to Be Australias T20 Coach Before Sandpaper Gate Controversy

New Delhi. Former head coach of the Australian cricket team Darren Lehmann has revealed that he wanted Ricky Ponting to become the coach of the T20 team. In the year 2018, after the sandpaper gate incident during the Australian team’s tour of South Africa, there was an earthquake in the country’s cricket. After this, apart from the board, the team, there were many changes in the management as well. For this reason, Ponting withdrew from this responsibility.

Lehmann told The Herald and The Age that if I look back now, I think I coached for a long time. I should have left about a year before that incident. I believe 4 years coaching tenure is enough, when you spend 300 days outside the home in a year. He further said that if the roles are divided, then as a coach you can stay associated with the team for a long time.

Let us tell you that in 2017-18, Ponting went on a tour of New Zealand with the Australian team as the assistant coach of Lehmann. Then he wanted to become the coach of the T20 team. He told ‘The Herald’ that he was very keen to play the role of coach at that time.

Ponting said that then I also had a conversation with Pat Howard. However, this discussion did not reach the point where both the parties could finalize the resources, other aspects related to coaching. He further said that however, what happened in South Africa in March 2018 changed a lot in Australian cricket. Darren Lehmann was replaced by Justin Langer as coach in all three formats, which was the right decision at the time.

Happy to be associated with IPL team: Ponting
The former Australian captain further said that my life has changed a lot since that incident. IPL is my coaching priority and it is working well with my media responsibilities. I spend the rest of my time with my family and am able to balance well with my personal life, which I have never done before. Right now I have to make a lot of compromises to take up the national role. Not the right time to do this.
