London. Former England captain Nasser Hussain has said that England has selected the estimated squad for the Ashes. He also said that it was surprising to see pacer Saqib Mahmood and leg-spinner Matt Parkinson be overlooked.

England on Sunday announced a 17-man squad for the Ashes tour.

Hossain said in a column for the Daily Mail, “England have picked a predictable squad for the Ashes tour and have not taken any risk by not taking any uncapped players. It was surprising to me to ignore Mahmood and Parkinson who are Jofra Archer.” And could have substituted in Ollie Stone’s absence.”

“I’d go for Parkinson’s leg spin instead of Dom Bess. If not Parkinson, Mason Crane,” he said.

Hussain said the selection of Mahmood would have helped England. He also expressed surprise at the presence of batsman Liam Livingstone in the team.

“Chris Silverwood and Joe Root love consistency in selection so they have picked up two capped spinners. I was surprised at Livingstone too,” Hussain said.

According to the former captain, the continued unavailability of Ben Stokes is a matter of concern for England.

“The non-availability of Stokes is a matter of great concern. It has given England a huge selection headache. Without him it is difficult to balance the team,” said Hossain.
