Jyotiraditya Scindia inaugurates Sindhudurg airport in Konkan region of Maharashtra

MUMBAI: Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia on Saturday inaugurated the newly constructed Sindhudurg airport in the Konkan region of Maharashtra through the online medium. According to an official statement issued in this regard, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray attended the program from Sindhudurg airport as a special guest in a virtual way. Union Minister Narayan Rane was also present during this.

Alliance Air, the regional arm of domestic airline Air India, operated the first flight from Sindhudurg airport to Mumbai under the Central Government’s regional air connectivity scheme -UDAN.

With the opening of Sindhudurg airport, it has become the 14th airport in the state. Scindia said in a statement, “The inauguration of Sindhudurg Airport and flight to Mumbai marks a new chapter in the glorious history of the Konkan region. This step will open new avenues for the development of local trade and tourism.

“I am confident that the number of daily flights from Sindhudurg airport will increase to 20-25 in the next five years with huge potential in the region,” he said. Developed by IRB Sindhudurg Airport, a specialized arm of IRB Infrastructure Developers, the airport is also known as Chipi Airport. The airport is spread over 275 acres and has an airstrip of 2,500 meters which is capable of handling aircraft such as Airbus A-320 and Boeing B-737. According to the statement, flights are being operated for 381 routes from 61 airports in the country so far under the UDAN scheme.
