Tokyo: Local media reported that the Japanese health ministry plans to start offering COVID-19 booster shots with medical personnel in December.

The ministry held an expert panel meeting on Thursday to discuss the details of giving booster shots and plans to make an official decision in November, Xinhua news agency reported.

The results of a US study showed that the efficacy of the Pfizer vaccine affected differently in different age groups five months after getting the second shot.

Efficacy decreased from 89 percent to 39 percent in the 16 to 44 age group, from 87 percent to 50 percent in the 45 to 64 group, and from 80 percent to 43 percent in those 65 years of age or older.

The panel urged the ministry to promote booster shots for older people and others who have a higher risk of developing severe cases, as the vaccine’s effectiveness for them is expected to decrease over time.

The US is providing a third shot for elderly people and those 18 years of age or older with potential health problems, and Israel is providing a booster vaccine for everyone 12 years of age or older.
