Seoul: Figures revealed Tuesday showed workforce numbers in the South Korean food service segment rebounded in April from a year earlier as the job market continues to recover after the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to Statistics Korea, the number of people employed in restaurants and eateries reached 1.6 million in April, an increase of 65,000 from the previous year.
The tally rebounded from October 2020, when the number of such workers declined by 179,000, a year-on-year decline, Yonhap News Agency reported.
Nevertheless, the total number of workers in the food services segment remained below pre-pandemic levels, indicating that the slowdown in the sector is continuing.
The number of such employees reached 1.72 million in April 2019.
The data shows that workers in the food service sector accounted for the largest share of 5.9 percent of the total 27.2 million people hired in April.
Face-to-face service segments, such as hospitality and retailers, were hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic as people avoided visiting offline stores over concerns about virus transmission.
More retailers closed stores amid non-contact consumption trends, as the number of workers at offline stores fell from 99,000 to 1.75 million.
The number of delivery workers increased from 53,000 to 423,000 in April due to strong demand for food and parcel delivery services. This is the biggest on-year profit for any April.
The data shows that the number of people providing care services for senior citizens increased rapidly from 59,000 to 591,000 as they age.
South Korea reported in the latest sign of job growth for the seventh month in a row in September that job recovery continued despite a fourth wave of the pandemic.
According to separate data from Statistics Korea, the number of people employed rose to 27.68 million in September, 671,000 more than a year earlier and the biggest on-year gain since March 2014.
