Are green crackers healthy? CSIR-National Environment Engineering Research Institute, an organization that develops green firecrackers, claims that the eco-friendly firecrackers prepared by them cause up to 30 percent less pollution in the environment. Not only this, there is also a claim that these green crackers are going to ensure a healthy life for people of all ages.
In view of this claim of the institute, the governments of many states have also given permission to run it for a limited period of time. But, the big question is whether these green crackers are really safe for your health or to what extent they can harm you. To know the answer to this question, we talked to Dr. Rajesh Chawla, Respiratory Medicine Expert at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital.
Let me inform you about the opinion of Respiratory Medicine Expert Dr. Rajesh Chawla, before that let’s go on the claims made about green firecrackers. CSIR-National Environment Engineering Research Institute has mentioned two major achievements regarding these green firecrackers. The first achievement is ‘Star Z’. Star Z are Light-Emitting Crackers.
In these crackers, 32% potassium nitrate, 40% aluminum powder, 11% aluminum chips and 17% other ingredients have been included in the new formula. With the help of this new formula, PM10 and PM2.5 can be brought up to 30%. At the same time, the name of the second achievement is ‘SWAS’ (SWAS). Swas are sound emitting crackers.
‘SWAS’ (SWAS) uses 16% potassium nitrate oxidizer, 9% aluminum powder and 3% sulphur, apart from 72% proprietary additives. This formula also helps in reducing PM10 and PM2.5 by up to 30%. CSIR-National Environment Engineering Research Institute claims that the use of chemicals has not only been reduced in lighting firecrackers, but potassium nitrate and strontium nitrate have been used instead of barium nitrate. The institute claims that the firecrackers developed by them are not only safe for the environment, but are also safe for the health of the elderly and children.
At the same time, regarding these green firecrackers Respiratory Expert Dr. Rajesh Chawla It is said that after the ban on the use of arsenic, mercury, lithium, lead and barium in the manufacture of firecrackers, the manufacture of two types of firecrackers started. In which the first is those which are made without barium and the second is crackers made with barium nitrate. Firecrackers containing barium nitrate are the ones in which you see green smoke coming out.
These firecrackers are being given the name of green firecrackers. He told that the smoke and other elements coming out of these crackers are still harmful. The elements of barium nitrate emanating from these firecrackers can especially damage the lungs. Due to this, people may also have to face serious consequences.
Dr. Rajesh Chawla It is said that for the last one and a half year-two years, we are witnessing the havoc of Korana epidemic in the country. The lungs of most of the people who have been affected by this epidemic have been affected in some way or the other. Therefore, these people should especially stay away from any kind of firecrackers. Whether they are normal crackers or green crackers.
The elements emanating from all these firecrackers are going to make their lungs sick. At the same time, even if you have escaped the grip of corona virus in the past, it is still not wise for you to put your lungs at risk. Apart from this, the elderly and children especially should stay away from these firecrackers.
Dr. Rajesh Chawla According to, in the current era, if you talk about cities like Delhi-Noida-Ghaziabad, where the level of pollution is already many times higher than normal, there is also a one percent increase in the pollution level. He said that in my opinion now people have to decide whether the priority is their health or entertainment. If they are concerned about their health, then they should avoid any kind of firecrackers.
