Digital Desk, New Delhi. After announcing the Google News Initiative (GNI) Startups Lab, tech giant Google has announced the names of ten startups that will form the first group of GNI Startups Lab. GNI Startup Lab is a 16-week catalytic program aimed at helping the next generation of independent Indian news startups achieve financial and operational stability.
Selected from more than 70 applicants from across India, ten news startups cover a wide range of journalism, including search, broadcast, political, data and local news organizations, said Kate Beddoe, director of APAC News Partnerships, in a blogpost. who give voice to underrepresented communities.
The diverse groups have newsrooms across the country, which produce news in languages including English, Hindi, Malayalam and Urdu, said Beddo. GNI Startup Lab India Local, created in collaboration with GNI Global Innovation Lab Ekos and Digipub News India Foundation and supports high-quality reporting for already under-served communities.
The top 10 startups include Behanbox, Bisbo, East Mojo, ED Times, Headline Network, Man Media, The Bridge, Suno India, The Q and The Probe. Our mission is to center the voices of women and gender-diverse individuals, as they are often turned into footnotes in the media, Behanbos said.
It said, through our analysis of laws and policies, along with on-the-ground reporting, our mission is to create useful resources for women and gender-diverse individuals to be equal partners in India’s democracy.
