digital desk,London. Former England spinner Monty Panesar feels the Joe Root-led side, which will tour Australia for the 11-week Ashes series in December-January, need to strengthen their top-order batting in recent times.
Barring Root’s form, England’s top order has not been able to score runs for quite some time. The team lost the two-Test series against New Zealand 0–1, and were trailing 1–2 in the five-match home series against Virat Kohli.
According to reports, England will tour Australia to play the Ashes to their full potential, Panesar told Sportsday on Saturday. The top batsmen of the England team have been struggling to score runs for the last few days.
Panesar said Root would need top-order support for England to progress in the series. Root has been in terrific form, his record unbelievable as he is scoring 30 per cent runs for the team.
Left-arm spinner Panesar, who has played 50 Tests for England and picked up 167 wickets, said that England should be wary of the Australian fast bowlers as they do well against the visiting team.
Panesar said, this Australian team is strong. They have good fast bowlers, it’s the pace that will potentially leave no stone unturned to beat England.
Australia had captured the Ashes in 2019 after the previous series was drawn in England.
