CM Reddy stressed- “In Andhra Pradesh, the demand for electricity has increased by 15% in the last six months post-COVID and 20% in the last one month, coupled with the shortage of coal has thrown the country’s energy sector into turmoil. “The daily average market price of approximately 40 MU/day of energy that we buy has increased 3 times from the daily average of Rs 4.6 per kWh on 15 September to the daily average of Rs 15 per kWh on 8 October 2021.”

The Chief Minister stressed that the state is facing shortfall in power distribution as the Andhra Pradesh Power Generation Corporation (APGENCO) has run out of coal stocks. He said “AP is meeting the grid demand of about 185-190 MUs per day. The power generation stations operated by APGNCO which supply 45% of the energy needs of the state, hardly have coal stock for 1 or 2 days And these may further affect production.”

The Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister also highlighted the need for additional water supply during the harvesting season, which comes at the cost of huge energy supply. Terming the situation as ‘alarming’, CM Reddy spoke of non-availability of electricity in the state during the few hours. CM Reddy in his letter to PM Modi said, “Due to low availability of power generation in the country, electricity is not available in the market for a few hours. The financial situation will get worse.”
