4 killed, 16 detained in communal violence in Bangladesh

Dhaka: A total of 16 people have been detained in Chandpur and Chittagong in connection with the attack on Durga Puja pavilions and clashes between police-mob in Hajiganj Upazila of Chandpur, Bangladesh on Wednesday night, in which four people died. Police confirmed this on Thursday.

After the attack on the policemen, the local administration has imposed Section 144 in Hajiganj Bazar area.

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has promised strict action against those who spread communal unrest by spreading fake pictures of the Quran at the feet of a Hindu deity at the Comilla temple during Durga Puja, the biggest Hindu festival here.

Police told IANS that they had vandalized the main gate of the venue, but could not do much damage to the main place of worship at Cox’s Bazar. Police said the attackers also marched in some other parts of Cox’s Bazar.

Hasina said, some people are religiously blind and they always want to create communal conflict. These people not only belong to the Muslim community, but also from all other religions. If we all work together, they can’t do any harm.

Bangladesh Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal told IANS on Thursday that two separate investigative bodies have been set up to probe the incident, one by the local administration and the other by the district police.

Mohammad Harunur Rashid, officer-in-charge of Hajiganj police station, confirmed that four people, identified as Al Amin (18), Yasin Hussain (15), Shamim (19) and Bubul, were killed in the police-mob clash. (30). The bodies will be handed over to the relatives after post-mortem.
